When prevailing narratives view people through the eyes of cold ice, a distorted and false image of the reality of those behind the ice is created. Fear and feelings of natural self-defense overflow, giving rise to a host of conflicting emotions such as hatred and discrimination. Once that layer of ice melts through honest human connections, a clear and focused view of reality, of the human warmth and core values ​​of the members of the community to which you belong emerges. This new clarity of perspective allows you to transform the natural instincts of hatred and fear into actions and words based on the strengthening and integrity of your deepest values. In this project, we use ICE as a visual metaphor, highlighting how removing the “N” from “NICE” changes everything. The initiative shows how state legislation and public discourse have frozen the warmth once offered to immigrants and refugees in Iowa. Local voices, activists, and Icebreakers from across Iowa share their reflections in intimate video interviews, published twice weekly, from May 31 to August 31.
